All the odds were against me. No one had ever succeeded before. Remember the old saying, “Ignorance is bliss.” It served me well. If I had known what I know now, I would have failed.
35 years ago I walked into a juvenile prison. I was young, naive, and scared to death. Not of the inmates or the job or even failure. My fear was on a much more base level of life. I was recently divorced with 2 children ages 3 and 5 and all I knew was I not only had to survive but I had to thrive! I was responsible for two little lives and that fear drove me relentlessly!
For an individual already plagued with self doubt, lack of confidence, dependency, an absolutely no self belief, I was not well equipped to move forward with any degree of responsibility.
But there were two things I innately possessed. A great desire to prove, I could survive independently and something inside of me that said, “you are meant for more.”
At that time my recruitment agency was in a state of flux due to the divorce and I needed a steady income. Fortunately, the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice hired me to write a Marketing and Career Program for incarcerated youth. Once the youth were trained in employability skills and marketing strategies they were placed in jobs, while incarcerated, in order to aide in their rehabilitation. The program was a success and reduced recidivism.
However, it was not that easy. When I walked into that prison, I was told by everyone and, I do mean everyone, that I was crazy and doomed for failure. I was asked, “what do you think will happen when you allow the inmates to take a job off campus with no supervision from any of our staff?” They will AWOL. They would run from work and we would not see them again. I was discouraged at every turn.
Maybe I was just stubborn, or to ignorant to hear them. I had no idea how the system worked. That played to my advantage. I just kept my eye on the goal and moved forward.
So let me ask you something? Do you believe in manisfestions?
Well, let me tell you a story. In my mind’s eye, I held a vision. It tickled the edges of my sub-conscience for years. When I found myself on my own, I saw this vision and felt it so much stronger. There was a large room with a conference table surrounded by men. I saw myself at the head of that table conducting a meeting. Me, little insignificant me, was leading this huge meeting with all of these important men listening and learning from me. That vision remained with me and never wavered.
The success of the Marketing and Career Program with the incarcerated population led to the development of local workforce development initiatives. The Lord opened opportunities that I never considered. AlI of this allowed me to segway into a national speaker for career, at-risk and workforce issues. Check out my bio at janfmassalon.com .
Why do I tell you this! Because, I want you to remember that life is a choice. We choose to thrive or be defeated. We choose to prosper or to wane. We choose to dream or take action. God has given all of us a choice to live intentionally and find purpose to glorify Him.
Let’s fast forward to today. I had a stellar career that brought me national and international recognition in my field and my dream did manifest itself. One day, many years later, that very insecure little girl looked around the table, and there were only men staring back at her. She was leading the meeting. My time had arrived!
As we grow often our dreams grow, as did mine. Through the experiences of life and learning, many mistakes, successes and failures, my journey was not always easy.
But it was worth it.
I am not the same person I was all those years ago. Because I stepped out “afraid” I have grown and my life has taken me places I would never have imagined!
This is what I want for you. To realize you are worth so much more than you can ever imagine. You have talents that you are not even aware of. Don’t sale yourself short because you lack confidence.
