It’s really just all hype. You don’t actually need toners, tonics, or astringents. And if you do isn’t one as good as the next?
How about a mini-dive into these products to give you a better understanding?
Face toners have been a source of curiosity for many a nanosecond. Individuals can’t live without them and others simply consider them a waste of money and one skincare product they can easily skip in their everyday routine, as well as purse. “Me” is one of the latter for many years, much to my detriment.
In truth, a toner is an essential step in the total skincare process. After cleansing the toner neutralizes the PH levels and brings moisture back to the skin. In addition, it prepares the skin for the remainder of the skincare regimen and assists in hydrating and anti-aging benefits. This may surprise you but each toner is made for your skin type. Specific ingredients are formulated to address your skin’s needs.
The delineation between toners and tonics has become distorted over the years but they actually have distinctive differences. Tonics are used to advance the appearance and maintenance of the skin. For example, the tonic will usually target a skin condition such as acne or hyperpigmentation.
So how do you know whether to use a toner or a tonic? I look at the benefits. I see the toner as an all-purpose product that benefits my ongoing skincare program daily with preparation, hydration, and anti-aging. I use tonics (serums) like vitamin C to address any hyperpigmentation and at my age a lipid barrier moisturizer. Tonics are products that will be adjusted to your routine as needed during the aging process or for the treatment of specific problems.

So what about astringents? This is a product that usually contains alcohol and is used for oily and acne-prone skin. However, you can find alcohol-free astringents.
Astringents will: tighten the appearance of pores, reduce acne and inflammation, and remove excess oil, and unclog pores.
Remember, alcohol-based astringents can be harsh on the skin often causing dryness and sometimes exasperate the acne.
Astringents containing witch hazel, citric acid, or salicylic acid help control oily skin without drying it out.
Acne comes in different forms. Teens often suffer from hormonal acne, while others struggle with cystic acne. We also see postpartum acne. It is important to know the type of acne you are treating.
